How to Interview a DJ

DJ

Music is an integral part of any wedding. There is the universally known “Wedding March” by Mendelssohn as well as the reception favorite “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. Since music is such a huge part of a wedding, it is essential that you don’t pick your wedding DJ on a whim.

Experience

Just because your favorite cousin DJs at the senior citizen home every Friday night, does make him a perfect choice for your wedding. Instead select a DJ with experience working several weddings because chances are that DJ already has a mental rolodex of appropriate wedding songs to play. An experienced DJ knows that Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” is about love lost and although it is beautiful it may not the best way to start a reception.

Knowledge

Now, I know what you’re thinking, but experience does not win every time. Say for example, you are having a Jewish wedding. You have narrowed down your choices to two DJs. The first one has extensive experience working with weddings while the other has worked fewer weddings but more Jewish weddings. You should choose the latter DJ even though he or she has less experience with weddings there is more knowledge with the requirements of Jewish weddings. Choose a DJ that understands all aspects of your wedding and how the music will encourage your guests to get up and party.

Professionalism

Let’s keep this tip short and simple. If you can’t even schedule an interview time with a potential DJ, pass. You need someone that communicates well and takes his or her job seriously. The music is only one aspect of the job and if your DJ is not professional, that can cause more headaches than necessary.

Price

Do not go for the cheapest DJ to save money. You may end up sacrificing a lot more in the long run. Yet, don’t expect the most expensive DJ to be the best because of the price. Hire the DJ which will allow you to sleep soundly and not break the bank.

Interviewing your wedding DJ may not always be the most fun part of wedding planning, but it should not be neglected. Just like movies have epic scores to evoke strong emotions, so do weddings. Your DJ directs your wedding’s musical score and it is up to you to select the best DJ for the job.
