The Halter Wedding Dress

Show off your back!

A halter dress features straps that go around the neck and shows off the back. If you do some digging in your closet, you will likely find a casual top, dress or bathing suit that features this popular style. When it comes to wedding dresses, this type of silhouette is especially appreciated for its youthful yet elegant look. Halter wedding dresses also come in many different styles and are flattering on most body types. However, if you’re conscious about your arms or back, this may not be the best style for you.

Some halter dresses can often look casual, but longer lengths and tasteful jewelry can elevate the elegance and glamour of this wedding gown. But if you are planning a low-maintenance outdoors or beach ceremony, this casual look may be exactly what you’re looking for.

When shopping for a halter dress, make sure to note the width and type of strap, the type of neckline, and how low the neckline goes.

Straps

The straps can range from thin spaghetti straps to thick bands. The angle of the strap can affect how your shoulders appear. For people with narrow shoulders, find a strap that does not have a sharp angle to your neck because that will make the shoulder seem even narrower. For those with broad shoulders, placing the straps far apart can create the illusion of narrower shoulders like our Charlotte gown wedding dress.

Straps are either tied together or can snap shut. If you have a friend who’s great at tying bows, choose a thicker strap. However, straps that have closures typically look more formal.

The Neckline

The most common necklines for a halter dress are the V, the sweetheart, and the scoop neck. You can show a lot of cleavage or none at all, but this type of dress draws attention to the bust line. For curvier girls, V-neck or sweetheart wedding dresses will allow you to flaunt your full chest.

Hair and Jewelry

Some halter wedding dresses feature jeweled, beaded, or lace collars. Halter dresses with simple V or sweetheart necklines can be worn with ornate jewelry, but a bare neck really highlights the shape of the dress. As for tresses, while there’s always an exception to every rule, wearing your hair up and back is the best look for halter dresses. Anything else would detract from the style of the dress. For winter or outdoor weddings, consider skipping the coat and wearing a scarf, shawl, or pashima instead.
