Girls love ruffles! There’s something adorable, fun, and sweet about them. Depending on the texture and color, ruffles can be playful and flirty or elegant and sophisticated. Think pink crepe ruffles on chair backs and yards of tulle ruffles on your wedding dress.
On the dress
A ruffle is a strip of fabric, lace or ribbon tightly gathered or pleated on one edge, often as a form of trimming. A ruffle without gathers or pleats may also be made by cutting a curved strip of fabric and applying the inner or shorter edge to the garment. A deep ruffle is usually called a flounce.
Ruffles on your dress can be a small and tasteful accent or a huge statement. You can find dresses that look like they’re made of ruffles, but I love smaller touches such as an asymmetric shoulder strap of a wedding dress done in another fabric or a ruffled hem.
Be aware that there are a variety of ruffles. Some can be machine made and are found on relatively inexpensive wedding dresses, while others need to be handmade.
Bridesmaid Dresses
Ruffles can add a tasteful touch to bridesmaid dresses. However, you should stick with simple accents. The combinations of a lot of ruffles and a bright color can seem gaudy. Necklines like a v neck are more suited for ruffles than a bateau. Limit ruffles to one section of the dress such as the sleeves, collar, or hem. As always, have a trusted fashion expert come along when you shop for bridesmaid dresses.
Accessories
Small ruffles on gloves, hats, or even the veil are also beautiful touches. The mantilla is a Spanish style veil that is often lined with lace ruffles. You can also increase the size of your bouquet with ruffles.
Ruffled ring bearer pillows are also lovely and can create the illusion of the rings sitting in the center of a giant satin flower.
In the décor
Other places for ruffles are on table decorations like table runners, as a centerpiece alternative to flowers. Fondant or chocolate ruffles will be a delight to the eye and the mouth on the wedding cake. Elastic ruffle hair ties are fantastic to secure favor boxes.
